Is there anything we can do about scam artist who prey on elderly with there sweepstakes scams?
You cannot save every sucker from him/herself. But bankers could be more careful about wiring money to Nigeria. It's amazing how many bankers ask no questions when victims of scam artists ask to wire $1 million, more or less, to an unknown account in a Lagos bank.
Reply:I'd say look it up. Fraud in general has some stiff penalties. If you are ineterested further, look into starting a VSI to strengthen those penalties. It's doubtful you can do much for preventing it in the first place, sadly.
Reply:YOu can contact www.dma.com to get them off the mailing lists and restrict the amount of mail they get.

The problem is that the elderly cannot be dissuaded that these mailing are just a scam.

My father-in-law is convinved he has won money, when he has won nothing, but you can;t tell him otherwise
Reply:If you are in the UK, then try contacting your local trading standards department. The citizens advice bureau may be able to help too. It may also be worth speaking to your local police station, to see if they know of this person.
Reply:Warn them. Teach them about caller ID. Check their mail for them. Don't let them check their own email without teaching them about spam.
Reply:no.. just make sure they tell you when they hear about it.
Reply:Yes, as soon as you catch one - fix him in such a way he will never do it again (do you understand me ?)

I am only HALF joking - but here in South Africa Pyramid scemes are outlawed - but still going on , the guy is arrested after having raked in millions, and gets 2 yrs jail - and of course out after 6 months, on "parole" they say -

Criminals Right Commission (formally known as Human Rights Commission) will see for that !!
