How much can i improve online banner clickthrough rates by including a sweepstakes or instant win offer?

Once i had an amazing clickthrough rate for a telco banner promising a win, you were supposed to click the banner when it changed colour. Text said "click when the cat gets green, and win" of course you didn't win (it was impossible to catch the green cat) but you were redirected to the actual contest.





On the other hand these mechanisms might get boring after a while. A smart headline planned in the right place might work better.





Or even better a campaign not necessarily based on banners but on community, word of mouth through the web and so on...

banner click throughs are not as good as content based ads. Anything free will obviously catch someones eyes, but I think also adding interesting colors and images can help too.
